Spring Leadership Conference

Dear Fellow NAHB Members:   It was my pleasure to represent you as your State Representative for Arkansas at the NAHB Legislative and Spring Leadership Conference held in Washington, DC on June 11 through June 14.  NAHB has been working for you and has prepared a priorities for housing brochure that we used to bring attention to our congressman and senators of the issues with affordability of housing.    https://www.nahb.org/-/media/ NAHB/advocacy/docs/top- priorities/blueprint/housing- affordability-blueprint.pdf? rev= afeddef27d964e51a5def4a0a285cf 4a   A group of Arkansans mostly from Central Arkansas visited with Congressman Steve Womack, Congressman Rick Crawford, Congressman Bruce Westerman, and Congressman French Hill along with their staff members and presented our issues to them.  They were all good listeners and I believe we were heard very well.  We will need to continue to elect representatives that hear our concerns and vote for issues that are pro housing.   Additionall

Your Lobbyist at Work

The Arkansas General Assembly convened Monday, June 17, for a three-day special session, called by Governor Sarah Sanders.  During the session, legislators voted to lower the top individual income tax rate from 4.4% to 3.9% and also to cut the top corporate income tax rate from 4.8% to 4.3%. Both measures are retroactive to January 1 of this year.   Meanwhile, members also passed a measure to increase the homestead tax credit from $425 to $500, and to transfer $290 million to the Restricted Reserve Fund.    Legislators also approved the appropriation for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s budget.  (They were not able to pass the agency’s budget during the recent fiscal session.)  The income tax cut is expected to total $500 million, and the increased homestead tax credit will total $50 million.    The legislature’s Arkansas Legislative Council (ALC) Occupational Licensing Subcommittee has been meeting in the interim, reviewing individual professional licensure programs. Elections matter and have a lasting impact. That’s why it is so important for NAHB members to be engaged in the political process every step of the way. BUILD-PAC’s mission is to elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to Congress who will protect and promote the home building industry in Washington. It is a grassroots PAC, governed by a Board of Trustees made up of more than 100 NAHB members from across the country. Candidate contributions are recommended by the trustee(s) of jurisdiction and approved by the full board. BUILD-PAC’s strong politi

In a Win for NAHB, House Passes Key Building Codes Bill

The House approved NAHB-supported legislation that would help jurisdictions preserve local control over the building code adoption process while also encouraging communities to take positive steps to withstand and recover from extreme events. The Promoting Resilient Buildings Act (H.R. 5473) addresses an issue that has become a serious concern for local governments and home builders across the country. In 2018, the Disaster Recovery Reform Act’s pre-disaster hazard mitigation program defined “latest published editions” of building codes to include the latest two published editions of relevant codes, specifications and standards. This definition sunset in October 2023, but H.R. 5473 would remove the sunset, permanently codifying the current definition of “latest published editions” for the pre-disaster hazard mitigation program. Without a definition of “latest published editions” for this program, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will only consider whether a ju
